Topic: Begin with the End in Mind: Exit Strategy Planning Basics

Description: When exiting business ownership, sellers of small to medium size companies, more often than not, leave money on the table. Owners of large corporations do the same but not to the same degree as owners of smaller companies. The reason for this is lack of early planning. Business owners tend to spend their time working in rather than on their business without concern for the day when they will leave the business. They don’t provide for the continuity of management and revenues, thinking the buyer will take care of those details. In the case of multiple owners their buy/sell agreements were never up-dated or worse, the agreement was inadequate form day one. Family businesses too often lack succession plans or allow for inheritance taxes in the event of the untimely death of the head of the family.

Mergers and acquisitions has been Lou's calling since leaving the banking industry in 1975 after a full career which included a term as Superintendent of Banks of the State of Ohio. His practice has focused on business sales, acquisitions, corporate finance, evaluations, start-ups and enhancement consulting. Educated in government and finance at John Carroll University and Bethany College he was a city administrator and has owned and operated manufacturing and retail businesses. During his banking days Lou also lectured at the University of Toledo, School of Finance. He has testified before state and federal legislative committees on matters concerning banking and related legislation and his speeches before financial trade groups have appeared in nation trade publications. Kastelic is a business appraiser and litigation support consultant.
